Dining and Lounge Cars

Some trains have dining cars while others have carts that roll down the aisle, bringing hot aperitifs and snacks to the seats. In all cases, food is expensive. Budget passengers are advised to visit the local supermarket and stock up before boarding trains, since carrying ones own food is perfectly acceptable and expected. Dining car service is provided on international trains in Europe, but only at specific times. Trains equipped with bar cars serve light meals at any time.

Restaurant car meals are served in a separate restaurant car, while dining at the seat is offered on many French trains, especially TGVs.  Bar car sandwiches, snacks and beverages can be obtained in the bar car and are sometimes served at the seat.  Food trolley carts pass through the aisles, which allows passengers to get something light to eat without leaving their seat.
